Shopify SEO, done inside Shopify's rules.
Shopify gets some SEO basics right for you. The rest depends on your theme, your apps and how your collections are set up, and that is where we work.
Shopify handles the plumbing. Your theme, apps and collections decide the result.
Shopify creates your sitemap and robots file, and gives every product, collection and page an address in a fixed pattern. What it cannot decide for you is how fast your theme loads, whether three apps are fighting over the same markup, or whether your collections are written to be found. That is the work. The general principles are on our ecommerce SEO page; this page covers what is particular to Shopify.
The Shopify-specific parts of search
A checklist you can run against your own store.
Collections as landing pages
Collection pages are where most Shopify buying searches land. Each needs a clear heading, an introduction that says what is in it, and filtering that does not leave a trail of near-duplicate addresses.
Duplicate product addresses
A product can often be reached through a collection path as well as its own address. Each should name the same canonical page, so we check what your theme actually outputs.
Theme speed
Heavy themes, sliders, autoplay video and oversized images slow a store on a phone. We find what is costing you and fix it.
Apps that hurt crawling
Apps can add scripts, redirects or duplicate pages. We go through what is installed and keep the ones that earn their place.
Product structured data
Themes and apps both write Product markup, and they sometimes disagree or repeat it. We make sure there is one correct block with the right price and availability for each variant.
Redirects and removed products
When a product is deleted or its handle changes, the old address should lead somewhere useful, using Shopify's URL redirects.
robots.txt and sitemaps
Shopify generates both. We check that nothing important is blocked or missing. Shopify warns that a bad edit to the robots template can cost all your traffic, so we change it only when there is a reason to.
Shopify left as it ships, and Shopify looked after
Audit, fix the theme and apps, then the collections
Free audit
We look at your theme, installed apps, collections and how search engines currently see the store.
Theme and app fixes
Speed, markup and duplicate addresses, made in a copy of your theme and tested before anything goes live.
Collections and products
Your best-selling collections and products get written for the searches behind them.
Report
Each month: clicks and impressions, indexed pages, what we changed and what is next.
Thinking about which platform to be on? See Shopify vs WooCommerce. Need changes to the theme itself? That is Shopify development, and Store Care keeps the store healthy afterwards.
Shopify SEO questions
Do I need to change platform to improve my SEO?
Almost never. Shopify can rank well. The problems we find are usually the theme, the apps and the collections, all of which can be fixed on the platform you are on.
Will you change my theme?
Only the parts that need it, in a copy of the theme that we test before it replaces the live one. You keep your design.
Which Shopify apps do you recommend?
We review the ones you have, keep what earns its place, and replace an app with a small amount of theme code when that is lighter and cheaper to run.
What does it cost?
We scope it after the free audit, based on the size of the catalog and what we find, and tell you what we would do and what it costs before you commit.
Can you work on a store you did not build?
Yes. We start with an audit so we know the store before we change anything, and we work through your Shopify staff access, never your password.
Do you guarantee rankings?
No. Nobody controls search rankings. We guarantee the work and a monthly report on what search engines have picked up.
