What does a signed solar job really cost you?

Lead counts don't pay the crew. Put in your marketplace leads and your own, and compare what each signed job really costs.

Marketplace leads

Your own leads

Marketplace, per signed job
A$600
Your own, per signed job
A$556

Your own leads cost A$44 less per signed job here.

Marketplace spend a monthA$3,600
Signed jobs from marketplaces6
Own-lead spend a monthA$5,000
Signed jobs from your own leads9
Own-lead jobs needed to match the marketplace cost8.3 a month

The starting values are an example, not a benchmark. A$60 is SolarQuotes’ published residential price, excluding GST. The rest are made up to show how the sums work, so use your own invoices and CRM.

The method

Simple sums, with nothing hidden.

1

Monthly spend

Marketplace: leads × price. Your own: ad spend + management fee.

2

Signed jobs

Leads × the share that sign.

3

Cost per signed job

Monthly spend ÷ signed jobs.

4

Jobs to match

Your own monthly spend ÷ the marketplace cost per job.

What to do with the number

  • Run it for each lead source, because one marketplace is often far worse than another.
  • Run solar, battery and commercial leads separately, because they differ in price and job value.
  • If shared leads close poorly, check how fast you answer before you buy fewer.
  • Read shared or exclusive solar leads for what each kind is good for.
FAQ

Lead cost questions

How do I work out cost per signed job?

Divide what you spent on leads in a month by the number of those leads that signed. If you bought 60 leads at A$60 (A$3,600) and signed 6 jobs, each job cost A$600 in lead fees, before any sales time.

What do Australian solar leads cost?

SolarQuotes publishes A$60 for residential solar, A$55 for a home battery and A$185 for commercial, plus GST. Solar Calculator publishes A$40 and A$36. Solar Proof publishes A$35 shared and A$120 exclusive. Check your own invoices, because credits change the real figure.

What is a good close rate on solar leads?

We don't know of a reliable benchmark. The only figure we found is one lead seller's claim of 8-15% on shared leads, and a seller has a reason to say that. Track your own for a month: leads received against jobs signed.

Are my own leads always cheaper?

No. A monthly fee is fixed, so at low volume it can cost more per job than buying leads. That is what the jobs-to-match figure shows. Own leads pay when you sign enough jobs to spread the fee, and search keeps working after you stop paying for it.
