Claude Code vs Cursor.

Claude Code if you want an agent that works from the terminal on Claude models and comes with a Claude subscription. Cursor if you want an editor built around AI with a choice of model vendors. They are not exclusive: Claude Code runs inside Cursor, so you can use both. Below is each one on plans, usage limits, models, autonomy, codebase context, team controls and data handling, read on the vendors’ own pages on 23 October 2026, with what a solo developer and a five-person team would pay.

Side by side

Twelve questions, two coding tools.

Claude Code here means Anthropic’s agent in the terminal, IDE extensions, desktop app and web. Cursor means Anysphere’s editor with its Agent, CLI and cloud agents.

QuestionClaude CodeCursor
What it isAn agentic coding tool from Anthropic that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands and works with your development tools. It runs in the terminal, IDE extensions, a desktop app and the browser. An AI-first code editor from Anysphere. Its Agent edits code and runs terminal commands inside the editor, with Tab completions, a CLI, cloud agents, automations and Bugbot code review around it.
How you use itType claude in a project and describe the task. It plans, searches files, edits, runs tests and asks before risky steps. The same agent runs headless with -p for scripts and CI, and as a GitHub Action.Open the project in Cursor and work in the editor, asking Agent in the side pane for larger changes. The agent CLI covers the terminal and CI, and tasks can be handed to cloud agents and picked up on web or mobile.
Models availableAnthropic’s Claude models only: Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5 (the default on every plan), Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5. Through Anthropic, or Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud’s Agent Platform and Microsoft Foundry.Cursor’s own models (Grok 4.7, 4.6, 4.5 and Composer 2.5) in the included pool. Third-party models at extra cost on Premium and above: Claude Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5, GPT-5.6, Gemini 4 Argon, Gemini 3.1 Pro and others. Plus is limited to Cursor’s models.
Pricing and plansIncluded with paid Claude plans. Pro $17 a month billed annually or $20 monthly; Max $100 (5x) or $200 (20x) a month; Team $20 or $100 a seat a month billed annually ($25 or $125 monthly); Enterprise $20 a seat plus usage at API rates. Or pay per token on the API: Opus 5.5 is $4 in and $20 out per million tokens.Sold as part of The X Subscription (Grok, Cursor and X). Free; Plus $8, Premium $30, Super $100 and Ultra $200 a month, or $80, $300, $1,000 and $2,000 a year. Teams seats $30, $100 or $200 a month; Enterprise is quoted. Third-party models cost API list price on top, plus $0.25 per million tokens on Teams and Enterprise.
Usage limitsA five-hour session limit and a weekly limit, shared with Claude chat. Pro gives “at least 5x more usage per 5-hour session than Free”, Max 5x or 20x Pro’s, and Max has a separate weekly Fable limit. Anthropic gives no fixed message count. Past the limit, optional usage credits bill at API rates.A weekly pool for Cursor’s models, shared with Grok: Premium is 4x Plus, Super 15x and Ultra 50x. Past it, keep going on prepaid top-ups at per-model rates or wait for the weekly refresh. Third-party models never come from the pool; they bill from prepaid credit from the first request.
Agent mode and autonomyPermission modes from read-only by default, through accept-edits and plan mode, to auto mode with background safety checks and a bypass mode meant for isolated containers. Subagents, experimental agent teams (about 7x the tokens) and cloud sessions on the web.Agent edits workspace files without approval, except configuration files, and asks before terminal commands and MCP tools by default. Checkpoints let you roll back an Agent run. Cloud agents, automations and Bugbot reviews need Premium or above.
Codebase contextSearches the repository as it works (file patterns, regex) and reads what it needs, with no index to build. Persistent instructions live in CLAUDE.md or AGENTS.md, auto memory carries learnings between sessions, and subagents keep noisy searches out of the main context.Instant Grep keeps a local search index on your machine; Cursor says it does not upload paths or code to build it and stores no embeddings of your codebase. An Explore subagent runs broad searches. Instructions live in .cursor/rules or AGENTS.md.
IDE integrationWorks in any terminal. Extensions for VS Code, Cursor and other VS Code forks, and JetBrains IDEs, plus a desktop app and the web. Your Claude plan covers the IDE extensions with the same limits.Cursor is the editor, so switching tools means moving editor. Its agent also reaches JetBrains IDEs through the Agent Client Protocol, and Cursor lists Xcode, Slack, GitHub, Linear and other integrations.
Team features and adminTeam (2 to 150 people) adds SSO, central billing, server-managed Claude Code settings, an analytics dashboard with GitHub contribution metrics, and spend limits on usage credits by organisation, group or member. Enterprise (20+ seats) adds SCIM, audit logs, custom retention and role-based access. API teams get workspace spend limits.Teams adds central billing, usage analytics, team-wide Privacy Mode, custom Chat data retention, SAML/OIDC SSO, mixed seat tiers and a team marketplace for rules, skills and plugins. Enterprise adds invoicing, SCIM, pooled usage, granular spend controls, audit logs and repository, model and MCP access controls.
Privacy and data retentionFree, Pro and Max users choose whether their data trains future models; retention is 5 years if they allow it and 30 days if not. Under commercial terms (Team, Enterprise, API) Anthropic does not train on Claude Code data unless the customer opts in, and keeps it 30 days. Zero data retention is available to qualified Enterprise accounts. With Privacy Mode on, Cursor says code is not used for training by Cursor or its model providers, under zero-data-retention agreements with all providers. With it off, Cursor may store and use prompts, code and editor actions to train its models. Requests go through Cursor’s backend even with your own API key.
ExtensibilityMCP servers, hooks at points in the agent loop (shell commands, HTTP endpoints, MCP tools, prompts), skills, plugins, subagents, shared .claude/settings.json, and an Agent SDK for building your own agents.MCP (including team-distributed servers and MCP Apps), rules, skills, subagents, hooks (which can load Claude Code hooks), a plugin marketplace and SDKs for TypeScript and Python.
What each is best at (our view)Long, multi-step tasks you hand off and review, work across many files, scripted and CI runs, and teams that want one tool whatever editor each person uses.Hands-on editing where you stay in the code, fast inline completions, comparing models from several vendors, and teams that want cloud agents and PR review in the same product.

Read on each vendor’s own pages on 23 October 2026; the sources are listed below. Prices are list prices in US dollars a month before tax unless marked otherwise. Cursor’s Pro, Pro+ and older Teams plans continue for existing customers but are no longer sold. Neither vendor publishes its usage allowances as a number of requests or tokens. Getting a prototype built is the smaller half of shipping it; see Prototype to Production for the rest.

Which one, when

Each is the right answer for someone.

Choose Claude Code when

FitsYou like working in the terminal or want an agent that runs the same in any editor, in scripts and in CI. Claude is the model you want, and you would rather have usage included in a subscription than pay per token.

Watch forIt runs only Claude models. Limits reset every five hours and weekly and are shared with Claude chat, and how far they go depends on the model; the default is Opus 5.5. An ANTHROPIC_API_KEY in your environment switches billing to the API.

Choose Cursor when

FitsYou want to stay in an editor with completions and an agent in the side pane, and you want to try models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Cursor in one place. Cloud agents and Bugbot reviews come in the same subscription from Premium up.

Watch forClaude, GPT and Gemini are not in the included pool: they bill at API list price from prepaid credit, plus $0.25 per million tokens on Teams. Plus at $8 is Cursor’s own models only. Check Privacy Mode is on before you open client code.

Use both when

FitsYou want Cursor as your editor and Claude Code as the agent. Anthropic says a Claude plan covers Claude Code inside Cursor with the same limits, Cursor can load Claude Code hooks, and both read AGENTS.md, so one set of project instructions serves both.

Watch forYou pay two subscriptions, and Claude models picked inside Cursor’s own Agent bill to Cursor credit, not to your Claude plan. Decide which tool owns which job so the bills do not overlap.

Choose neither when

FitsYou do not write code and want a working app from a description. An AI app builder may suit you better; see Lovable vs Bolt vs Replit.

Watch forApp builders get you to a first version fast. The same gaps that matter in any prototype (access rules, keys, tests, deploy) still have to be closed before real users arrive.

What it really costs

What one developer and a team of five pay.

The totals are our arithmetic on list prices checked on 23 October 2026, before tax. They cover subscriptions only; extra usage depends on how hard each person works the tools. The third card is the work after the prototype.

1 · One developer

A year of each, at three levels of use

Light: Claude Pro is $200 a year billed annually; Cursor Premium is $300 a year. Daily: Claude Max 5x is $1,200 a year (monthly only); Cursor Super is $1,000 a year. All day: Claude Max 20x is $2,400 a year; Cursor Ultra is $2,000 a year. On Cursor, every Claude, GPT or Gemini request is extra at API list price. Both: Claude Pro plus Cursor Premium is $500 a year.

2 · A team of five

Seats for five developers

Claude Team: five Standard seats are 5 × $20 × 12 = $1,200 a year billed annually; three Standard and two Premium are $3,120. Cursor Teams: five Premium seats are 5 × $30 × 12 = $1,800 a year at the monthly price, with third-party model use from a shared prepaid balance at API list price plus $0.25 per million tokens. Claude Enterprise needs 20 seats, so it is not an option at five.

3 · Taking it to production

When the prototype has to hold up

Most prototypes and side projects never need this. When real users, payments or customer data arrive, our Prototype Production Review checks security (including Supabase row-level security, exposed keys and auth), the data model, performance and deploy for $2,500 fixed in 5 business days, with a graded report and a fix plan. It is credited in full to a build with us within 60 days; fixing and launching runs on an embedded team at $3,000–$7,500 per engineer per month.

The anti-positioning

Do not pick on a benchmark or a launch post. Try both on a real task from your own backlog for a week, and watch where the usage meter goes, because both vendors meter by work done, not by seat alone. And whichever tool wrote the code, a working demo is not a reviewed product: before real users arrive, our $2,500 Prototype Production Review gives you a graded report and a fix plan. We use both tools and are a partner of neither, so we have no reason to prefer one.

Compare FAQ

Claude Code vs Cursor

Claude Code vs Cursor: which is better?

It depends on how you work. Claude Code suits developers who hand off multi-step tasks from the terminal, want the same agent in any editor and in CI, and want Claude usage included in a subscription. Cursor suits developers who want to stay in an editor with completions and an agent pane, and who want models from several vendors. Claude Code also runs inside Cursor, so you do not have to choose.

Can I use Claude Code inside Cursor?

Yes. Anthropic’s help pages say a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan covers Claude Code in VS Code, Cursor and other VS Code forks, and JetBrains IDEs, with the same limits as the terminal. That usage counts against your Claude plan. Claude models chosen in Cursor’s own Agent are billed by Cursor at API list price instead.

How much does Cursor cost?

Checked on cursor.com/pricing on 23 October 2026, in US dollars before tax: Free; Plus $8 a month (Cursor’s own Grok and Composer models only); Premium $30; Super $100; Ultra $200. Cursor’s docs list annual prices of $80, $300, $1,000 and $2,000 a year. Teams seats are $30, $100 or $200 a user a month, and Enterprise is quoted. Third-party models such as Claude and GPT are billed on top at API list price.

Is Cursor free?

There is a free plan with limited Agent and Chat requests. Paid plans start at $8 a month for Plus. Cursor is now sold as part of The X Subscription, so plans also include Grok and X features, and the weekly usage pool is shared between Cursor and Grok.

Is it cheaper to use Claude models in Cursor or in Claude Code?

For heavy Claude use, usually in Claude Code. A Claude plan includes Claude usage up to its limits for a flat fee. In Cursor, Claude models are outside the included pool and billed at Anthropic’s API list price from prepaid credit, plus $0.25 per million tokens on Teams and Enterprise for eligible models. On 23 October 2026, Opus 5.5 was $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens.

What changed in Cursor’s pricing in 2026?

Cursor moved to The X Subscription, one subscription for Grok, Cursor and X, with Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra tiers and a weekly usage pool shared with Grok. Third-party models left the included usage and now bill at API list price. The older Pro, Pro+, Ultra and Teams Standard and Premium plans continue for existing customers, with monthly usage pools and on-demand billing.

Do Claude Code and Cursor train on my code?

Anthropic does not train on Claude Code data under commercial terms (Team, Enterprise, API) unless the customer opts in. Free, Pro and Max users choose in their settings, and retention is 5 years if they allow training and 30 days if not. Cursor says that with Privacy Mode on, code is not used for training by Cursor or its model providers; with it off, Cursor may use prompts and code to train its models.

I built an app with Claude Code or Cursor. Is it ready for users?

Often it is close. What prototypes usually lack is what a demo never needs: access rules that hold, keys kept out of the browser, tests, monitoring, backups and a rollback path. Our Prototype Production Review checks those for $2,500 fixed in 5 business days and ends in a graded report and fix plan, credited in full to a build with us within 60 days. Many side projects do not need it.
