How to rank in ChatGPT: a practical guide to ChatGPT search

How to rank in ChatGPT: let OAI-SearchBot crawl you, appear in the results ChatGPT search reads, publish answer-first pages, and measure your citation rate.

Feature graphic: How to rank in ChatGPT: a practical guide to ChatGPT search

To rank in ChatGPT, let OpenAI's search crawler read your site, appear in the search results ChatGPT reads when it answers, and publish pages it can quote and check. OpenAI's own instruction is short: to make a site eligible for ChatGPT search, allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl it and make sure your host or CDN accepts traffic from OpenAI's published IP addresses. Past eligibility, OpenAI says ChatGPT ranks results using multiple factors meant to surface relevant, reliable information, and that placement is not guaranteed. It publishes no list of those factors. Anyone selling you "the ChatGPT ranking factors" is guessing. This guide sticks to what OpenAI and Microsoft document, as checked on 23 October 2026, and to the work that follows from it.

One word of framing. There is no position one in ChatGPT. An answer either names you, cites your page as a source, or does neither. So "ranking" here means being named and cited on the questions your buyers ask, and the number you track is a citation rate, not a rank.

Two ways ChatGPT can mention you

ChatGPT can name a company from what the model learned in training, or from pages it finds when it searches the web during an answer. Most of the work you can control is on the second path, because search answers come with citations and change when the web changes. OpenAI runs a separate crawler for each job, and each one is controlled separately in robots.txt.

User agentWhat OpenAI says it doesWhat blocking it in robots.txt does
OAI-SearchBotSurfaces websites in ChatGPT's search featuresYour pages are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links
GPTBotCrawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's foundation modelsSignals your content should not be used for training. It does not remove you from search
ChatGPT-UserVisits a page when a user's request calls for it, inside ChatGPT or a custom GPTRobots.txt may not apply, because the visit is user-initiated, and OpenAI says it does not decide what appears in search
OAI-AdsBotChecks the safety of pages submitted as ChatGPT adsOnly visits pages submitted as ads

That table comes from OpenAI's crawler documentation, which also says each setting is independent of the others. You can block GPTBot to keep your content out of training and still allow OAI-SearchBot so you appear in search. That is a legitimate choice. Blocking OAI-SearchBot is the only one of the four that takes you out of ChatGPT search.

Step 1: let OAI-SearchBot in

Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for a group that names OAI-SearchBot, or a User-agent: * group with Disallow: /. If you want to appear in ChatGPT search, OAI-SearchBot needs to be allowed on the pages you want cited. OpenAI says search-related robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to take effect.

Robots.txt is half of it. Firewalls, bot-management rules and CDN presets block crawlers without touching robots.txt, which is why OpenAI asks site owners to allow requests from its published OAI-SearchBot IP ranges. Check your WAF or bot settings for a rule that challenges or blocks unknown bots, and check your server logs for OAI-SearchBot requests and the status codes they got. A wall of 403s means the crawler is arriving and being turned away.

Then check what the crawler can read once it is in. OpenAI's article on offline web search, which answers from OpenAI's own index and cache, lists the usual reasons a page is missing or stale there: a robots.txt block, CDN or bot blocking, a login wall, content that depends on scripts or dynamic loading, a page that is new or rarely accessed, and site structure that makes deeper pages hard to discover. Every one of those is fixable on your side. The raw-HTML test and the rest of the site checks are in our GEO field guide, so they are not repeated here.

Step 2: appear in the sources ChatGPT search reads

When ChatGPT searches, it does not send your buyer's message to a search engine word for word. OpenAI says ChatGPT typically rewrites the question into one or more targeted queries, sends them to search providers it partners with, and may follow up with more specific queries after reading the first results. It can add the user's general location, inferred from their IP address, and, if memory is on, details from saved memories. OpenAI's article links Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy policies for the providers involved. It also keeps its own index, which its offline search mode uses.

Three things follow from that.

  • Be indexed where ChatGPT looks. Microsoft is one of the providers OpenAI names, so being crawled and indexed by Bing is a sensible baseline. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit an XML sitemap of canonical URLs, and use IndexNow so new and changed pages are picked up quickly. OpenAI does not say how much of each answer comes from Bing, so treat this as one input, not the whole system.
  • Write for the query ChatGPT will generate. A buyer types a long, chatty prompt. ChatGPT turns it into short search queries like "[category] pricing 2026" or "[category] for [industry]". You need a page that is a strong result for those short queries. A page per buying question beats one page that mentions everything.
  • Expect local and personal variation. Location and memory change the rewritten query, so two people asking the same thing can get different sources. This matters when you test, below.

For the page-level rules, Bing's Webmaster Guidelines are the most detailed publisher guidance we found from a provider OpenAI names. They cover Copilot and grounding as well as search, and say SEO fundamentals still apply to AI answers. Several of the rules read like a ChatGPT checklist: put essential information near the top, make facts explicit and visible on the URL itself, keep each URL on one topic, use consistent names for people, organisations and products, and make sure structured data matches what the page shows. Bing also says markup does not guarantee grounding or citations. These are Microsoft's rules for Microsoft's products, but they line up with what OpenAI's own articles imply.

Step 3: publish answer-first pages

Once a page is retrieved, the model has to lift something from it. The pages that get quoted state the answer in the first two sentences, use a heading phrased the way a buyer asks the question, and give facts a model can repeat without hedging: a price, a timeline, a named method, a dated figure. A paragraph of adjectives gives it nothing to quote.

The retrieval, extraction and verification steps behind this are in how ChatGPT decides which companies to recommend. The short version for a page you are writing today:

  1. Answer in the opening. The first two sentences under the H1 should still make sense if quoted alone.
  2. One question per page. Pricing, comparison, "is X right for Y" and "how does X work" are separate pages.
  3. Numbers with dates. "Agents from $8,000 flat, as of October 2026" can be quoted. "Affordable" cannot.
  4. An FAQ written in buyer language. Each answer complete in one paragraph, and the same facts as the body.
  5. Server-rendered. If the answer only appears after JavaScript runs, assume the crawler never saw it.

Step 4: keep your entity facts consistent

ChatGPT has to be confident it knows which company it is naming. If your site, your Organization schema, LinkedIn and directory listings use different names, addresses or descriptions, the safer move for a model is to leave you out. The same applies to your own pages: if the pricing page, an old blog post and your llms.txt disagree on a price, there is no figure it can defend.

Fix this in one sitting. Write down your legal name, trading name, one-sentence description, address and headline prices. Then make every surface match: site header and footer, About page, schema, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, Bing Places and the two or three directories that matter in your category. The full list of conditions that remove a company from answers, with how to test each, is in what gets a company excluded from AI answers.

Step 5: earn third-party mentions

This is the step most sites skip, and the one that follows directly from how ChatGPT searches. When a buyer asks for the best firm for a job, the rewritten query returns roundups, comparison pages, directories, review sites and forum threads. If those pages do not mention you, an answer built from them cannot either, however good your own site is. Your domain describing itself is also the weakest evidence a model has.

So the work looks like PR more than SEO. Get listed in the directories your buyers use. Contribute real data or expertise to the publications that write the roundups. Give a comparison site the facts it needs to include you accurately. Publish original numbers others want to cite. Bing's guidelines are explicit about the shortcuts: link buying, artificial promotion, keyword stuffing and content written to trigger AI responses, including attempts to manipulate language models, can reduce visibility or get a site removed. Do not hide instructions for AI in your pages.

An llms.txt file is not a substitute for any of this. It is cheap to add and no major assistant has said it reads it as a ranking input. We explain what it does and does not do in llms.txt explained.

Step 6: measure with a fixed set of prompts

You cannot manage a citation rate you do not track. The method that works:

  1. Write 15 to 25 buyer questions in the words buyers use, taken from sales calls and support tickets. Leave your brand name out. "What is [your company]" measures recognition, not whether you get recommended.
  2. Run each one in ChatGPT at least three times, spread over days. OpenAI says people who are not signed in can use web search. Where that works in your country, test logged out. Otherwise use a clean account with memory off, because saved memories feed the rewritten query.
  3. Record four things per answer: whether you were named, whether your page was cited as a source, which competitors were named, and which sources were cited. The source list tells you which third-party pages to get onto.
  4. Compute the share of answers that name you, and the questions where you appear in every run. Repeat monthly on the same panel.

For a sense of scale, our own benchmark put a fixed panel of buying questions about AI agencies through Google AI Mode and Bing Copilot Search; the most-named firm on Google appeared in 20% of answers. That study did not cover ChatGPT, and your category will differ, so judge your number against the leader on your own panel. What a good rate looks like, and why one run proves little, is in what is a good AI citation rate. If you want to do the first pass by hand this afternoon, follow check your AI visibility in 30 minutes.

Two more signals help. In your analytics, segment referral visits whose source contains chatgpt.com and watch which landing pages they reach. And expect clicks to understate visibility: Bing's guidelines make the same point, that content can appear as a citation without producing a click.

ChatGPT SEO and LLM SEO: one job under two names

ChatGPT SEO and LLM SEO are the names people search for this work; GEO, generative engine optimization, is the name the research uses. They describe the same job: being named and cited when an AI assistant answers a buyer's question. It starts from ordinary SEO, because ChatGPT, Copilot and Google's AI answers all retrieve pages through search before they write, and then changes the target from a position on a results page to a share of answers. Everything in steps 1 to 6 applies whichever assistant you care about, with the crawler names and index sources changing per vendor.

What not to spend money on

  • A promised placement. OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed. A vendor guaranteeing a ChatGPT position is promising something OpenAI does not.
  • Mass-produced AI pages. Bing's guidelines say large-scale generated content without editorial review may be excluded from indexing. It also gives a model nothing original to cite.
  • Blocking GPTBot to "protect" search visibility, or allowing it to "boost" it. OpenAI says the settings are independent. Decide GPTBot on training grounds alone.
  • Rewriting everything at once. Fix crawler access and entity facts first, then the five to ten pages that answer your most valuable questions, then go after third-party mentions.

When to do it yourself, and when to get help

Steps 1 to 4 are a few days of work for someone who can edit robots.txt, read server logs and rewrite pages. Do them yourself first. Step 5 is slower, because it depends on other people, and step 6 only pays off if someone runs the same panel every month and acts on it.

Start with a baseline. Our free AI Citation Audit runs your category's buying questions through the major assistants and shows where you are named, who is named instead, and where the answer is wrong. If you want the whole program run for you, Ascent is our 12-month growth program: site fixes, answer-first content, entity clean-up, third-party coverage and monthly citation-rate reporting, from $4,000 a month with no upfront fee. The exact monthly figure is set on a scoping call after the audit.

Questions this raises

Short answers to the questions this article is written to settle.

How do I rank in ChatGPT?

Allow OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and in your CDN or firewall, which OpenAI says makes a site eligible for ChatGPT search. Then make sure you appear in the search results ChatGPT reads, by being indexed (including in Bing, one of the providers OpenAI names), publishing one answer-first page per buying question, keeping your company facts identical everywhere, and earning mentions on the roundups and directories that answer category questions. OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed and publishes no list of ranking factors, so measure a citation rate on a fixed set of buyer questions and adjust.

Does ChatGPT search use Bing?

Partly. OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers, rewrites the user's question into targeted queries for them, and links Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy policies for those providers. It also keeps its own index, built by OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI does not say how much of an answer comes from each source, so being indexed in Bing is a sensible baseline but not the whole picture. Checked on 23 October 2026.

Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT search?

No. OpenAI's crawler documentation says each setting is independent. GPTBot gathers content that may be used to train its models, and disallowing it signals you do not want that. OAI-SearchBot is the crawler for ChatGPT search, and blocking it is what keeps your pages out of search answers. ChatGPT-User makes visits on a user's behalf and OpenAI says it does not decide what appears in search.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT search?

OpenAI says search-related robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to take effect. Being crawled and cited takes longer and varies by page: OpenAI says there is no refresh guarantee for a specific URL in its index, and new or rarely visited pages are more likely to be missing or stale. Being named on competitive buying questions also depends on third-party mentions, which take months to build.

What is LLM SEO, and how is it different from SEO?

LLM SEO, or ChatGPT SEO, is the work of getting AI assistants to name and cite your company in their answers. It builds on SEO, because assistants like ChatGPT retrieve pages through search before they answer. The differences are what success means and what gets quoted: there is no list of ten results, so you track the share of buyer questions where you are named, and pages win when they state a checkable fact in the first two sentences.
